like a gunshot

don't forget me.

it's spattered on the window panes
and it's stuck behind the gold in your eyes
we stand on opposite sides of the room
and i wonder if you can hear
my heartbeat.

i left it in the corner of the living room
and i tucked it into your coat pocket
when you weren't looking.
maybe you'll never find it.
but that's okay.

she brushed it out of my hair
and traced it in the lines of the sunrise.
with her sunflower eyes
that cry when nobody is
looking.

don't forget me.

because i love you so much.
and it's still ringing like a gunshot in my ears.

hold on a little bit longer.
keep the car door open.
make the morning last.

she lets go.
she has to.
he shakes his head.
and i shut the door.

don't forget me.
