To My Piggies

to the three little pigs who live over the hill -

hey. 

you're leaving. i get that, i really do. you'd follow your father anywhere, and you are so young yet. there wasn't, won't be, much of a choice. you will get into the car. and you will drive down the road.

       and you will never come back.

i get that. i really do. so promise me, when you are strong enough to look around and realize what all of this means, you will look back down the road you came up, and you'll remember us. it was a good short while. a good short while that meant...everything. you were the wildness in my life. you were the memories that hadn't yet come to pass. 

          one day, you will be old. you will have legs long enough to step over the holes, and you will no longer fit underneath my rib cage when i hold you. you will have lived so long beside the sea that you will have forgotten that you couldn't remember the smell of it when you were here. 

so, if i had to say one thing, i'd say i loved you.

life will come for you, and i won't be there. but maybe, just maybe, that's okay. one day, when you are old, i will come to see you, and we might not recognize the faces or the eyes. but we'll remember the times. the days we ran in the dusk. the mornings we fell into the light. or...maybe you won't remember.

but i will.

and i'd say i loved you, but i'd say that i love you still, and i will forever and ever.
