leaf prophet



i wanted so badly to write poems about you.
about your smile.
about our punchlines.

i wanted so badly to fit you into a constellation of words i could trace.
                                                                              into a cloud of stars
                                                                                      into a kindness of ravens.

and then, in the stillness, i realized that i really only wanted

something to hold onto.

so i let go and became a prophet for the leaves
that blow away fearlessly
when they can no longer
                   hold on.
