Camp 1

We rise up to meet the sun, and it's perfect.

The flap of the tent is the first thing I see. It's green and grey, stroked with dew. I get up. It's cold, cold, cold, but the shivering helps me to fully awaken. It makes my heart pound.

Or maybe something else does.

As I pull on chilly jeans and shirt, my breath falls out in puffs. I am almost afraid. Afraid of what I need and what I expect.

I step out and run to the fire, shivering turning into trembling excitement. Their sleepy eyes laugh at me. But it's a good laughing. We're all brothers and sisters here, blood and flesh. 4:30 turns into 6:00, and the others come, and we await them eagerly.

We blessed few, who woke by moonlight because we could not sleep another instant.

As we curl our toes near the fire, we talk about dreams. About things that mean something to us. He laughs, hard and good, and she grins back. This is our home now, sun sleepless as it rises through the trees.

They should be sleeping, she must think.

And maybe she's right.

But we couldn't wait.

We couldn't wait to see each other out in the morning haze.

  1. Beautiful! Youth retreats are like this; my cabin mates and I would wake up at about three thirty in the morning, but we slept at twelve, and it would be cold with snow engulfing our cabin but it would be nice and cozy. I got your package by the way, I LOVE IT!!! :DDDD I sent you a thank you video via email. Is it all right if I do a post about it on my blog?

    xoxo Morning
