So Much Light

 


I watched him build the fire.

It was early, and still.

But there was so much light,
so much light streaming through the windows.

His hands worked carefully,
the sparks coming out to meet him.

He turned his gentle brown eyes my way and smiled.

The lion dog moved to my side
and I rubbed my fingers through the fur.

He turned his liquid gold eyes my way and wagged his tail.

How did I gain these things?

They have come by no means of my own.

I'm often afraid
and I was a little bit afraid of them.

But something else has grown in the place of my fear.
Something stronger.

There is so much light streaming through the windows.

So much light.
