Dear Friend

skies

Dear Written Character,

You are strange and lovely, deathless in my hands.

I promise I shall be gentle.

I promise that you won't fade.

I cannot, however, promise a safe journey. I cannot promise that happy ending we always dreamed of. I see now that the very ugliness of the last words on the last page become you well.

You are so terribly brave, and so dear to me.

But now we must both answer some questions, and get somewhere. Eventually to the end.

It's going to hurt you, and possibly me.

But we'll be okay somehow.

You cannot walk through my door, and sit beside me like I wish you could. You cannot talk about the weather, nor about the current price of tea. You cannot dance in the rain with me, nor feel the sun after the storm has passed.

But I wrote you on the pages of my heart.

And you'll stay there forever.

I promise.

Love,
A Friend

  2. Dear Written Character (who also happens to be a Captain),

You are killing me with your hilarious one-liners and the fact that you can't read. I can't write you without snickering and sometimes just downright cracking up. Sometimes it hurts, man.

So here's the deal. You need to either stop being so funny or start being by best friend and come to my house daily with your jokes.

I realize that neither is possible, so we'll just have to go on the way we've been going.

I can't promise that I won't continue to have side-aches from laughing too hard at your antics. I can't promise that I won't be up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea for you.

I also can't promise that you will totally like what happens in your near future.

That's just the way it goes.

Hope you enjoy having the snarky Duchess, her sarcastic younger sister, and the two craziest bodyguards ever on board.

    Love,
    ME

(despite the non-serious response to this post, this was beautiful and I loved it and you are so talented and I shall come and walk through your door and sit beside you and talk about the weather and about the current price of tea and dance in the rain and feel the sun after the storm has passed with you. I'm no written character, but I hope to be a good friend. :-))

    1. I literally can't with that Captain.

And you're better than a written character, because you're real, and you're the most brilliant person I know. I love you to death, Hannah Joy!

  4. I think I stopped breathing, Adelaide. This is MIND-BLOWING, my friend and this very true. I LOVE THIS PIECE OF WRITING. Can't. UGH. THE FEELS, FEELINGS. "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.” < You just went out your door, Adelaide. Keep writing with power. X
