to cover up our scars we tried

to clothe ourselves in dust

and painted all our broken bones

in complimentary shades of rust

i wound your smile around my hands

you broke your teeth upon my heart

but all the the things that made us gentle

drove us both apart.

how i wish to say it quickly

like scalpel in a wound

but it would sound too desperate 

and it'd all be out of tune.

so i'll laugh gaily to myself

cornered in the thought

that maybe despite the evidence

you could love me

not.
